At Consumer Reports, our mission is to promote a fair and just marketplace while ensuring consumer safety. As an Automotive Engineer at our 327-acre Auto Test Center, you will report to the Associate Director, Auto Test Development and work closely with auto testers, usability experts, and journalists. Your work testing, capturing, and recording data on over 50 vehicles annually—including EVs, plug-in hybrids, and gas cars—will be critical in influencing vehicle safety, usability features, and overall consumer trust. This hybrid role requires onsite presence up to 4 days per week.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and participate in the hands-on testing and reporting of findings for over 50 vehicles each year.
- Assist in developing and documenting test criteria, ensuring protocols and procedures are followed, developing methodologies to meet testing objectives, writing and reviewing technical reports, and providing feedback on vehicle performance.
- Represent Consumer Reports as an expert at industry events, press interviews, podcasts, and client engagements.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Applied Science, or a related field.
- Experience Required: At least 5 years in a vehicle-testing role within the automotive industry (or an equivalent combination of work experience and education).
- User Experience background with experience in User Testing, Vehicle User Interface Design, or similar.
- Strong and confident communicator with proven ability to relay findings through written and oral reports.
- Proficient with Microsoft and Google Suite (including Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Docs).
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Qualifications: Master's Degree.
- Multimedia interaction experience.
- Comfortable with interviews, serving as a spokesperson, and appearing on video or podcast platforms.
- Up to date on automotive trends, including experience in compiling and writing technical reports.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Ability to lead and coordinate teams on time-sensitive projects.
- Willingness to occasionally respond to auto-related current events outside normal business hours.
