Senior UX Researcher, Core User Protection

Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 6 years of experience in an applied research setting (e.g., product or academic), or similar.
- Experience with research methods (e.g., usability, studies, contextual inquires, 1:1 interviews, unmoderated research studies).
Preferred qualifications
- Master's degree or PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Statistics, Psychology, Anthropology, or a related field.
- 6 years of experience in an applied research setting, or similar.
- 3 years of experience working with executive leadership (e.g., Director level and above), and working with products related to account/device security or related topics.
- Experience working with victims/survivors ethically and humanely on sensitive/traumatic topics.
- Experience working with government regulators and subject matter experts (e.g., academia, NGOs, public service).

You’ll play a critical role in helping your team understand user needs and will drive impact at all stages of product development, ensuring products are useful, usable, and helpful. You will explore user behaviors and motivations by conducting primary research, including: field studies, interviews, diary studies, ethnography, surveys, usability testing, and logs analysis. You will also grow within a supportive UXR community offering mentorship, regular meetups, and exclusive internal tools.
As a User Experience Researcher on the Core User Protection team, your insights will help us understand how to prevent bad actors from harming users on our products, provide reporting pathways and support to victims and survivors, and help Google become an industry leader on how to keep people safe across a suite of products.
The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $159,000-$231,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
- Conduct research with hard-to-recruit populations, particularly on sensitive topics, including quantitative research methods, such as surveys, logs analysis, and experiments, and qualitative methods, such as usability testing, contextual inquiry, diary study, and Rapid Iterative Testing and Evaluation (RITE).
- Use multiple research methods in a coordinated research program to answer questions and convey concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences.
- Help teams identify new opportunities to pursue and guide them on how best to land them with users.
- Work closely with researchers and cross-functional partners both within your team and across other product areas on shared goals.
- Create an actionable insights narrative with other teams, such as data science, product analytics, or similar groups.
