Our client is a major utility company in the SE Region of the United States with a commitment to clean energy and expanding their operations. They currently have a major need out of their Surry Power Station for a Human Factors Engineer SME as they are tackling on a major decade long modernization project. This person will be VITAL to the success of the ongoing work and support for all Human Factors related to the Engineering & Design.

This position is a long - term contract role, initial contract length of 12 months, but looking to keep this person for entirety of project length. In this role you will receive:

  • $90 - 110/hr + 1.5x OT Pay

Overview

A Human Factors Engineer or Human Factors subject-matter expert is needed to support the major Digital Instrumentation and Control (I&C) modernization program for Surry Power Station. The Digital I&C project is a 10+ year effort as part of Subsequent License Renewal (SLR) to upgrade safety and non-safety-related analog systems to digital and transform the main control room to flat panel displays and controls. This role works with a cross-functional team of HFE peers, design engineers, station stakeholders, and project leads to evaluate changes to the main control room and how the operator interacts with the new digital control systems.Responsibilities include:

  • Lead Human Factors Responsible Engineer for Surry Power Station, working with the larger fleet team for the project
  • Participating in Human Factors program activities in support of the project (e.g., functional requirements analysis and function allocation, task analysis, user interface design and evaluation, Human Factors Engineering evaluations)
  • Reviewing Design / Engineering Change packages from a human factors perspective
  • Achieving qualification under client program for HFE
  • Overseeing contracted human factors work, mentoring, and ensuring consistency and compliance with Dominion Energy and industry standards
  • Coordinating support activities for Factory and Site Acceptance Testing and Simulations (e.g., procedure and training development and changes)
  • Interfacing with the primary equipment supplier to support human factors reviews and input
  • Partnering with the projects engineering and licensing groups and station stakeholders, including Operations, I&C, Training, and about 10 other departmental work groups
  • Analyzing risk and incorporating mitigating strategies in the human factors program
  • Reporting and presenting status to project managers and management team on a periodic basis
  • Interface with the industry on latest guidelines and best practices

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in human factors engineering
  • 15+ years of overall industry-related working experience
  • Full knowledge of engineering theories and principles
  • Skilled in use of advanced techniques and modification and extension of theories, precepts and practices of the field and related sciences and disciplines
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team project lead
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)
  • Strong personal computer skills
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices
  • In depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Excel, 2D and 3D drawing/modeling tools, etc.)
  • Equally effective working independently or in team environment
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks
  • Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.

Preferred

  • Preferred familiarity in working in nuclear power industry and/or power plant environments
  • Preferred experience with human factors evaluations on an analog to digital conversion project and human-machine interfaces (HMI)
  • Preferred current knowledge of industry guidance and regulations including NUREG-0700 and NUREG-0711 and applications to commercial nuclear operations. Would consider similar experience in non-nuclear human factors-related functions (Department of Defense, Aviation/Transportation Industry).
  • Preferred College/University degree (Bachelors in Human Factors Engineering or related science) or certificate or coursework in human factors engineering
  • Preferred background or experience in Operations or Operations Training
  • Preferred experience serving a dedicated role on a project team
